What is the Mentor Program?

The HLA Maryland Mentor Program is designed to foster meaningful connections between healthcare professionals at different stages of their careers. This 12-month program pairs experienced leaders with members looking to enhance their skills, navigate challenges, and advance their careers. By providing guidance, sharing insights, and offering personalized support, the program empowers mentees to grow while allowing mentors to give back to the healthcare community. High-quality mentorship and leadership coaching programs like this are often associated with significant costs, but this program is offered at no additional cost—an exceptional new benefit of HLA Maryland membership. With flexible meeting schedules and a focus on collaboration, the Mentor Program is a unique opportunity to build lasting professional relationships and drive leadership development within HLA Maryland.

Who Can Participate?

  • Mentors: Healthcare leaders with at least 5 years of experience. Mentors guide mentees with advice, support, and shared experiences.

Mentees: Learning and Growing in Your Career

Mentees are active HLA Maryland members who want personalized support and guidance from an experienced professional. Whether you’re new to healthcare leadership or looking to advance your career, the program offers an invaluable opportunity to learn from someone who’s been where you want to go.

Mentees play an active role in the relationship by bringing topics and goals to the table. As a mentee, you are in charge of shaping the conversation while your mentor provides feedback and advice based on their experience.

To be a mentee, you must:

  • Be an active member of HLA Maryland.
  • Commit to attending scheduled meetings with your mentor.
  • Be open to feedback and actively participate in discussions.
  • Come prepared with topics or questions for each meeting.

This program is suitable for new managers stepping into their first supervisory role and seasoned professionals seeking a trusted advisor. By taking an active role in the process, mentees can maximize the benefits of mentorship, building skills, confidence, and professional networks.

Mentors: Guiding the Next Generation of Leaders

Mentors are healthcare professionals with substantial experience, such as clinic managers, C-level executives, or supervisors, who are passionate about helping others succeed. As a mentor, your role is to guide your mentee in tackling career challenges, providing advice, sharing your knowledge, and serving as a sounding board for new ideas.

Each mentor-mentee relationship is unique, and discussions may range from career planning to problem-solving, depending on the mentee’s needs. There are no strict rules for what topics mentors should cover, offering flexibility to adapt to each relationship.

To be a mentor, you should:

  • Have at least five years of experience as a healthcare manager.
  • Be an active member of HLA Maryland.
  • Exhibit qualities such as honesty, effective communication, and a willingness to serve as a role model.

Mentors also:

  • Help mentees set and achieve professional goals.
  • Share insights into healthcare leadership and management.
  • Motivate and support mentees, especially during challenges.
  • Build mentees’ confidence and encourage networking.
  • Highlight the importance of professional organizations and relationships.
